The Alexander Technique is a unique mind/body method that penetrates to the heart of movement. It shows us how to UNDO habitual patterns of tension, which interfere with your body’s inherent design. It is a powerful tool that can be used in anything we do, whether we are practicing yoga asana, singing, acting, or performing everyday activities. Training in the technique, we learn how to deepen the quality of our attention in any activity, developing both the ability to notice what we are doing and then to make conscious choices to move more efficiently and effortlessly. We are designed for movement, and when we move in harmony with our body’s natural design we experience ease, fluidity and grace. When our energy flows, we can easily direct it into creative pathways that enhance our WELLBEING and allow us to function at our highest potential.
We often respond inadvertently to the pressures of our fast-paced, goal- oriented society in ways that create discord with our body's natural design. Excess straining, trying too hard or trying to get it right gradually develop into habitual patterns of tension that impede the free flow of our movement and energy. This can result in a variety of disorders, ranging from poor posture to respiratory ailments and chronic pain.
Awareness is the first principle in the Alexander Technique: developing the ability to notice yourself so that you can begin to see what your habits of use are.
What's happening right now? As you read this information, allow yourself to pause. Without changing anything, begin to sense your head and spine and notice the following: Are your neck muscles tight? Are you jutting your chin forward, and is the back of your head dropping back onto your shoulders?. Can you feel your spine rounding or slumping and your shoulders dropping forward? We are using our bodies for an entire lifetime. Don't they deserve our attention?
